Russia’s fashion industry is facing a series of challenges in the wake of Western designer labels withdrawing from the country due to the conflict in Ukraine. While this has created opportunities for domestic designers to shine, they are grappling with their own set of hurdles.
One major issue plaguing Russian designers is their heavy dependence on imported fabrics and accessories. Yulia Lavrichenko, a fashion stylist, stressed the need to develop domestic production of these materials. Even renowned Russian couturiers rely on Italy for exclusive fabrics used in their high-end clothing. However, with Italy participating in European Union sanctions against Russia, trade has become extremely difficult, especially in the luxury market segment.
Olga Sinitsyna, who designs hats and accessories under the brand SCORA, revealed the struggles her business faced due to the pandemic, military campaign, and subsequent depreciation of the Russian ruble. Prices of imports skyrocketed, and logistics became significantly more expensive. To offset these costs, Sinitsyna was compelled to raise the prices of her products. Moreover, she lamented that nothing showcased at Moscow Fashion Week is made from Russian raw materials, further exacerbating the financial burdens.
Despite the numerous challenges, designers like Albina Akkulova find potential in this situation. Akkulova, renowned for her enchanting, fairy tale-inspired dresses, believes that the limitations will cultivate innovative solutions and stimulate the growth of a domestic fashion manufacturing base. She sees this as a golden opportunity for Russia to develop and establish its own fashion industry.
