CFDA Unveils Nominees for 2020 Fashion Awards

This year’s nominees include a stellar lineup of talented designers such as Emily Adams Bode, Kerby Jean-Raymond, Gabriela Hearst, Telfar Clemens, and Pierpaolo Piccioli. The recognition of these visionary creatives comes at a crucial moment for the fashion industry, as it navigates the challenges posed by the global Covid-19 pandemic.

Initially slated for June 8th, the CFDA Fashion Awards had to be postponed indefinitely in light of the ongoing health crisis. Nevertheless, the CFDA remained steadfast in its commitment to honoring excellence in fashion design and finally unveiled the nominees on July 20th.

The nominees span across a diverse range of categories, including American Womenswear Designer of the Year, American Menswear Designer of the Year, American Accessories Designer of the Year, American Emerging Designer of the Year, Global Women’s Designer of the Year, and Global Men’s Designer of the Year.

Noteworthy contenders for the American Womenswear Designer of the Year title include industry stalwarts such as The Row’s Ashley and Mary-Kate Olsen, Brandon Maxwell, Gabriela Hearst, Marc Jacobs, and CFDA Chairman Tom Ford. Meanwhile, the American Menswear Designer of the Year category features emerging talents like Emily Adams Bode of Bode, Kerby Jean-Raymond of Pyer Moss, Todd Snyder, Thom Browne, and Tom Ford.

In the American Accessories Designer of the Year category, nominees include fashion icons like The Row’s Olsen twins, Gabriela Hearst, Stuart Vevers of Coach, Jennifer Fisher Jewelry, and Telfar Clemens. The American Emerging Designer of the Year category highlights promising newcomers like Christopher John Rogers, Kenneth Nicholson, Peter Do, Reese Cooper, and the dynamic duo behind Staud – Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto.

Internationally, the Global Women’s Designer of the Year nominees feature luminaries such as Daniel Lee of Bottega Veneta, Dries Van Noten, Miuccia Prada of Prada, Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino, and Rick Owens. Similarly, the Global Men’s Designer of the Year category includes esteemed designers like Craig Green, Jonathan Anderson of Loewe, Kim Jones of Dior, and Virgil Abloh of Louis Vuitton.

The winners of the 2020 Fashion Awards will be announced on September 14th, coinciding with the commencement of the shortened New York Fashion Week schedule. In a departure from previous years, there will be no honoree categories for this edition. CFDA Chairman Tom Ford underscored the significance of recognizing creativity and innovation in the fashion landscape amidst the current global challenges.

Voting for the nominees is open until July 27th, with the results slated to be announced on the CFDA’s official website and social media platforms. CFDA President and CEO, Steven Kolb, outlined plans to provide support to fashion community members impacted by the pandemic and to implement measures aimed at fostering racial equity in the industry.

While the traditional gala event will not be held this year, the focus will be shifted towards initiatives aimed at supporting designers through scholarships and fundraising activities. The CFDA remains steadfast in its mission to uplift and celebrate the remarkable contributions of fashion designers, paving the way for a brighter future in the industry.
