Celine’s ‘Parade’ Collection

In his latest collection for Celine, fashion designer Hedi Slimane found inspiration in the allure and splendor of youth. The collection, titled “Parade,” draws from a prose poem by Arthur Rimbaud. The show video was filmed at the breathtaking Chateau de Vaux-Le-Vicomte, known for its historical significance and architectural beauty. The chateau’s gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, are renowned for their grandeur.

The opening line of Rimbaud’s poem, “j’ai seul la clef de cette parade sauvage,” which translates to “I alone have the key to this savage sideshow,” sets the tone for the show video. Hedi Slimane, with his extensive background in both fashion and photography, also references Charles Baudelaire in this collection. Baudelaire’s description of youth as a “dark thunderstorm, crossed here and there by bright suns” resonates with Slimane’s own career, which encompasses both glamorous success and brooding darkness.

The collection itself reflects a stormy winter aesthetic, featuring a range of protective clothing such as duffle coats, blousons, puffers, and sequined dresses paired with parkas. Oversized cable sweaters styled with shiny cocoon skirts create a moody yet preppy look. The use of shearling material in oversized vests and cabans, often worn inside-out, adds a touch of luxury. Classic riding dusters and jackets reminiscent of Chanel are paired with jeans to create a weather-proof ensemble. Military jackets adorned with gold braid detailing introduce a touch of urban action.

The show video was shot on a chilly afternoon, with models walking past the grand basins, canals, and meticulously designed parterres of Le Nôtre’s garden. The footage includes stunning drone shots of the chateau, interspersed with black and white images showcasing the intricately shaped topiaries, majestic fountains, and monumental neo-classical statues. Slimane draws on a line from Paul Verlaine in his program notes, comparing the models’ looks to statues, reflecting his own status as a sculptor of fashion.

Contributing to the overall poetic ambiance of the video is the soundtrack created by Regina Demina, an artist known for her installations, dance performances, acting, and rising music career in Paris. Demina’s music perfectly complements the visual spectacle.

Ahead of the video release, Celine sent mysterious gift packages to editors, containing golden double-‘C’ logo dice engraved with enigmatic words like ‘why,’ ‘maybe,’ ‘often,’ ‘obviously,’ or ‘never.’ When arranged in order, the words formed the phrase ‘Right now, yes, indeed.’ This intriguing gesture served as a teaser for the highly anticipated show.

While some may argue that Hedi Slimane played it safe within his established range, the video undeniably showcases his artistic skills. It is refreshing to see Slimane continuing to craft captivating collections, unlike Rimbaud, who abandoned his writing career at a young age. The tragic story of Nicolas Fouquet, the visionary behind Vaux-Le-Vicomte who was arrested on the night of its grand opening, adds an elegiac touch to Celine’s visit to the chateau.

The show concludes with a poignant moment, featuring a freckled model approached by a deer as fireworks illuminate the sky above Vaux-Le-Vicomte. Hedi Slimane’s latest collection for Celine captures the fleeting beauty and youthful spirit against the backdrop of a majestic setting. It serves as a reminder of the ephemeral nature of life and the importance of cherishing each precious moment.
