Burberry’s Bold Mission to Reduce Plastic Waste

In an effort to combat plastic pollution and promote sustainability, Burberry, the renowned British fashion house, has set a bold target to minimize the use of unnecessary plastic packaging by the year 2025. Teaming up with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s ‘New Plastics Economy Global Commitment,’ Burberry stands alongside 150 other influential companies in a united front against the environmental impacts of plastic waste.

As part of its comprehensive strategy, Burberry is actively phasing out problematic single-use plastics in favor of reusable, recyclable, or compostable alternatives within the next six years. Already making significant strides towards this mission, the fashion giant has successfully removed 20 tonnes of plastic by eliminating plastic lamination from its retail bags. Moreover, discontinuing the use of poly bags for garment covers has led to a reduction of an additional 9 tonnes of plastic waste.

Looking ahead, Burberry has outlined a series of ambitious targets to meet its sustainability goals. By the end of the current year, the company plans to roll out retail bag rain covers crafted from at least 30% bioplastic and compostable materials. Additionally, a greener, compostable hanger option will hit the shelves by the conclusion of 2019. By December, Burberry aims to launch an eco-friendly, compostable shroud and polybag, all while exploring the integration of fully compostable and 100% bio-based materials in its transit packaging lineup by 2025. Furthermore, a hanger recycle program is in the works to encourage customers to return hangers for repurposing, promoting a circular economy model.

Despite previous controversies surrounding the incineration of unsold products, which garnered criticism from environmental advocates, Burberry’s firm commitment to reducing plastic usage exemplifies its dedication to sustainable practices and eco-conscious decision-making. This initiative not only showcases Burberry’s pledge to cleaner production processes but also underscores the brand’s commitment to shaping a greener future for the fashion industry and leading by example in the realm of environmental stewardship.
