Burberry sells 10 acres of land in Leeds, halts plans for new manufacturing site

Burberry, the prestigious fashion brand famous for its distinctive check print, recently announced the sale of 10 acres of land in Leeds, halting plans for a new manufacturing site in the city. The proposed site, situated next to the historic Temple Works building, was originally designated to house a cutting-edge manufacturing and weaving facility dedicated to producing Burberry’s iconic trench coat.

The decision to sell the land comes after Burberry allowed the development option for Temple Works to expire in 2017. While still retaining ownership of the adjacent land, Burberry has chosen to sell it to an undisclosed buyer. Julie Brown, Burberry’s chief operation and financial officer, emphasized the brand’s ongoing commitment to Yorkshire and the UK. Despite the change in plans, Burberry remains dedicated to investing in their existing manufacturing facilities in Castleford and Keighley, where the beloved Burberry Heritage trench coat is made.

Furthermore, Burberry has reaffirmed its ties to the region by expressing plans to expand its business services site in Leeds. Since its opening in 2017, the office has housed around 400 employees working across various departments including finance, HR, procurement, customer services, and IT. This decision underscores Burberry’s strategic focus on enhancing their manufacturing operations and business services in the UK.
