Burberry Celebrates 160th Anniversary with Short Film

To celebrate its 160th anniversary, Burberry has released a captivating short film titled “The Tale of Thomas Burberry.” This nearly four-minute film takes viewers on a journey through the life of the iconic British brand’s founder, Thomas Burberry, showcasing his achievements as a pioneer, inventor, and visionary.

“The Tale of Thomas Burberry” offers a glimpse into Burberry’s fascinating story, highlighting some of the defining moments in his life. The film delves into a love story and his struggles during World War I, shedding light on the challenges he faced during this period.

It was during the war that Thomas Burberry invented the first trench coat. Recognizing the British army’s need for a more suitable raincoat for officers in the trenches, he developed this iconic piece of outerwear. The film also explores Burberry’s passion for fabric, showcasing his determination to create waterproof garments with breathable materials.

Thomas Burberry’s visionary approach led to the invention of gabardine in 1880, a fabric that became a cornerstone of the Burberry brand. Despite suffering from rheumatism and being unable to wear a waterproof coat that prevented sweat from evaporating, Burberry’s determination and hard work paid off, resulting in this innovative material.

The film highlights the peak of Thomas Burberry’s career in 1919 when he became the official outfitter to the court of King Edward VII at the remarkable age of 84. This achievement solidified Burberry’s status as a luxury brand and showcased the founder’s immense contributions to the fashion industry.

This is not the first time Burberry has used film as a medium to celebrate the holiday season. Last year, the brand released a short film commemorating the fifteenth anniversary of the film “Billy Elliott,” featuring renowned personalities such as Sir Elton John, Naomi Campbell, and Romeo Beckham.
