Brand Machine Group Acquires London Tailor Peckham Rye

Brand Machine Group (BMG) is solidifying its commitment to its menswear operations with the recent acquisition of London tailor Peckham Rye. The acquisition of Peckham Rye, which has a rich history dating back to 1795, showcases BMG’s recognition of the resilience of the menswear market post-Covid. The company acknowledges the craftsmanship and expertise that the six-generation family-run tailors bring to the table. With this strategic move, BMG aims to preserve the fine heritage of Peckham Rye while creating a brand that appeals to the modern young gentleman.

The acquisition of Peckham Rye aligns with BMG’s strategy to expand its menswear and tailoring divisions and capitalize on its impressive growth trajectory. In addition to relaunching the luxury menswear brand Duchamp, BMG owns other well-known brands such as Penfield and US Polo Assn. With the addition of Peckham Rye, BMG will introduce a pre-collection in May that combines timeless elegance with contemporary British preppiness, catering to the urban man of today.

The tailoring collection by Peckham Rye showcases a blend of classic patterns such as houndstooth check and herringbone with modern elements like denim. The jeans in the collection feature tailored details such as a higher waist and side adjusters. The collection also includes soft tailored jackets made from linen blends and jerseys. Peckham Rye items are priced starting from £50, with tailoring pieces ranging from £299 to £350. The brand pays homage to its history through military stripes in its accessories and ties, while also embracing a strong off-duty narrative with branded caps, sportswear, and jerseys mixed with tailoring and smarter pieces. This reflects the lifestyle of its customers, who have blended and hybrid working lives.

Peckham Rye stands out from other tailoring brands due to its distinctive and unconventional heritage. While many brands often highlight their Savile Row roots, BMG focuses on the brand’s less conventional history. Founded by a self-taught 14-year-old named Tommy McCarthy over two centuries ago, Peckham Rye initially specialized in making army uniforms. The brand exudes a sense of old-school south London charm. Tom Duncan, Brand Director of BMG, states that launching Peckham Rye is a deliberate move to expand BMG’s offerings in accessible tailoring, leveraging the team’s exceptional skill set. The post-pandemic period presents significant opportunities in men’s wardrobes, particularly in tailoring and occasionwear. BMG considers it a privilege and an opportunity to continue the remarkable legacy of a brand with such an enviable heritage in the sector.
