Bolt Threads Expands Reach of Vegan Leather with Greener Pastures Pledge

Bolt Threads, a sustainable materials company, is actively working to expand the reach of its vegan leather material called Mylo. To incentivize brands to prioritize sustainability, Bolt Threads has launched the Greener Pastures Pledge. This initiative grants preferential access to Mylo to brands that commit to eliminating virgin animal leather from their product lines. Ganni, a fashion brand that aims to phase out the use of virgin leather by 2023, inspired the creation of this pledge.

As Bolt Threads faces high demand for Mylo, the company intends to scale its supply chain by opening a new commercial facility. In light of this, brands demonstrating a commitment to supporting new material innovations over animal-based materials will be given priority access to Mylo. The goal of the Greener Pastures Pledge is to encourage brands to embrace alternative materials and challenge the traditional practices of the fashion industry. While there is no perfect solution available yet, the public commitment from brands to implement alternative materials showcases positive progress within the industry. Investing in innovation is crucial for driving real change for a sustainable future.

Dan Widmaier, the CEO and founder of Bolt Threads, understands the challenges that brands face when altering their supply chains. He believes that brands daring enough to make such changes to minimize their environmental impact should be rewarded for their trailblazing efforts. The Greener Pastures Pledge serves as a motivating factor for brands that have the courage to commit to high-quality, animal-free alternatives, not just for their customers but also for the planet.

Mylo, referred to as “mushroom leather,” is made from mycelium, the underground root-like system of fungi. It is certified as bio-based, 100% animal-free, chromium-free, and DMFa-free. The material is grown in vertical farming facilities powered entirely by renewable energy sources.

The partnership between Bolt Threads and brands dedicated to sustainability represents a significant stride towards creating a more responsible and eco-friendly fashion industry. By actively supporting the growth of alternative materials like Mylo, these brands are spearheading a more sustainable future.
