Black Friday Sales Trends and Strategies 2021

This year’s Black Friday sales painted a varied picture for retailers, with some experiencing a decrease in transactions while others saw a notable increase in sales. Barclaycard reported a nearly 17% decrease in transactions on Black Friday, contrasting with Nationwide Building Society’s report of over 4.7 million transactions on live debit cards, showing just a 1% decrease from the previous year but a significant 19% increase from the previous Friday.

Despite the challenges faced by retailers, fashion and beauty products continued to be popular choices among consumers. For example, John Lewis saw a substantial 35% increase in online orders, with a 37% surge in searches during the shopping event. Interestingly, the retailer’s busiest hour fell on the day it launched its deals, a week before Black Friday itself.

To leverage the shopping excitement, many retailers, including John Lewis, started their Black Friday offers early. This strategic move paid off, with the retailer reporting a 67% year-on-year increase in the number of products shipped since the promotion began. While toys and electronics were high in demand, fashion and beauty brands like Mint Velvet, Hush, Charlotte Tilbury, Barbour, Clavin Klein, and Chanel also attracted consumers.

Notably, John Lewis’s top fashion product, the Give a Little Love Heart Shaped Umbrella, garnered attention as proceeds from its sales went to charity. This aligns with a growing trend where businesses are combining altruism with sales during Black Friday. For instance, Anya Hindmarch chose not to discount its products but instead donated profits to charity, reflecting a shift towards social responsibility.

In summary, this year’s Black Friday sales presented both challenges and successes for retailers, highlighting changes in consumer behavior and business strategies. The emphasis on early promotions and charitable initiatives signals a evolving landscape in the retail industry during this major shopping event. Fashion and beauty products stood out as popular choices, indicating promising prospects for retailers in these sectors.
