Belstaff Announces Higher Turnover but Increased Losses

Belstaff, the renowned British brand recognized for its motorcycle-inspired outerwear, has announced higher turnover for the full year ending December 2022. However, despite this positive development, the company has experienced an increase in losses due to certain one-off factors.

One of the significant points of interest in Belstaff’s financial accounts is the brand’s reliance on its owner, billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS. The accounts express concerns regarding the brand’s ability to sustain itself and emphasize the need for additional financial support. Although there is currently no formal agreement in place, INEOS has demonstrated support for the brand ever since acquiring it in 2017.

Belstaff has showcased a robust financial performance, with a notable 18.9% rise in turnover to reach £59.7 million. The company attributes this growth to its strong performance in both wholesale and retail channels. Furthermore, there has been an improvement in gross profit, with figures rising to £11.8 million as compared to the previous year’s £8.7 million.

However, there has been a substantial increase in operating losses, with a rise of £9.6 million to reach £14.2 million. This can be primarily attributed to a £15.5 million movement in exchange differences related to the revaluation of inter-company loans. As a result, pre-tax and net losses have widened to £28.8 million from £16.6 million.

Excluding these exchange differences, the company’s underlying EBITDA (Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) shows a somewhat improved performance, with losses narrowing to £5.8 million from £11.3 million. This provides a more positive outlook on the business’s overall performance.

Belstaff has solidified its goal of achieving growth in both revenue and profitability. To accomplish this, the brand has placed renewed emphasis on its brand image and heritage. This includes the introduction of new product categories, a refreshed visual identity, and the utilization of innovative technical fabrics.

The company has also taken steps to enhance the retail experience, unveiling a new retail concept at its Regent Street Flagship store in London. This concept aims to modernize Belstaff’s rich motoring heritage while maintaining its authentic appeal. Additionally, the brand is refurbishing its existing store portfolio to align with the new design and actively seeking new locations that resonate with the brand’s image.

Belstaff is also dedicated to strengthening its wholesale customer portfolio through strategic brand partnerships that align with its image and boost market awareness. By continuously monitoring and optimizing these partnerships, the brand aims to maximize returns and fortify its position in the market.

In conclusion, despite the challenges and widening losses, Belstaff remains steadfast in its determination to position itself for future growth. Through capitalizing on its brand heritage, investing in new product categories, and creating innovative retail experiences, the company aims to enhance both its revenue and profitability as it approaches its milestone 100th anniversary year.
