The Fondation Louis Vuitton recently launched an exhibition on April 5th, showcasing the collaborative efforts of renowned artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. This exhibition features an impressive collection of 84 co-signed canvases, providing an in-depth exploration of their artistic friendship.
Following the immense success of the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibition in 2018, which attracted a staggering 700,000 visitors, the Fondation Louis Vuitton hopes to replicate this enthusiasm by delving into the artistic partnership between Basquiat and Warhol. Until August 28th, art enthusiasts and the general public have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the joint production of these two influential American artists.
The exhibition showcases a diverse range of artworks, including drawings, paintings, photographs, and personal exchanges between Basquiat and Warhol from the 1980s. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of cross-portraits, featuring depictions of Basquiat by Warhol and vice versa. This event marks one of the largest dedications to the collaborative work of Basquiat and Warhol, curated by Dieter Buchhart and Anna Karina Hofbauer in association with Olivier Michelon.
Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH, expressed his excitement about the exhibition, stating that it invites visitors to relive one of the most intense chapters in art history during the second half of the 20th century. By working together, Basquiat and Warhol not only showcased their generosity and mutual trust but also provided a glimpse into their artistic exchanges.
After its run in France, the exhibition will move across the Atlantic and be showcased at the Brant Foundation in New York, starting in late October 2023. This allows a broader audience to experience the visionary collaboration between these two iconic artists.
The Fondation Louis Vuitton, established in 2014, aims to continue the philanthropic efforts initiated by the LVMH Group in the 1990s. In addition to supporting various philanthropic causes, the foundation strives to make art and culture accessible to everyone through the organization of free events.
