Luxury fashion brand Balmain has enlisted rapper Kanye West as its ambassador for its 2016 communication campaign. This move comes after Balmain’s successful collaboration with Kanye West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, last year. The brand has a history of working with high-profile personalities such as Claudia Schiffer, Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell, and the Jenner sisters.
To promote its campaign, Balmain has turned to social media platform Instagram. The brand’s artistic director, Olivier Rousteing, believes that Instagram is the perfect tool for their “see now, buy now” strategy. The campaign images feature Kanye West and top model Joan Smalls in a black and white photoshoot by Steven Klein. In the pictures, Kanye West is seen mimicking a fall while Joan Smalls attempts to rescue him, creating a contemporary dance-like aesthetic.
Joan Smalls is dressed in Balmain creations from the brand’s autumn-winter collection, while Kanye West is seen wearing a custom jacket created by Olivier Rousteing.
In addition to their current collaboration with Kanye West, Balmain’s success dates back to the 1950s when their designs caught the attention of celebrities such as Brigitte Bardot, Audrey Hepburn, and the Queen of Belgium.
