Luxury fashion house Balenciaga has made a grand comeback with its 50th couture collection, an event eagerly anticipated after a pause of over half a century. Despite the setback caused by the Covid-19 crisis, the brand’s loyal followers have remained enthusiastic. Artistic director Demna Gvasalia showcased his contemporary vision of Haute Couture at Balenciaga on July 7th in the brand’s historic headquarters in Paris.
The highly anticipated show featured 63 men’s and women’s looks, presented to a select group of 70 guests, including renowned names like Bella Hadid, Kanye West, Lewis Hamilton, and Aya Nakamura. Gvasalia’s collection seemed to play with contrasts by blending direct references to the legacy of Cristóbal Balenciaga with the streetwear aesthetic that has become synonymous with the brand since Gvasalia took over in 2015.
The collection presented a striking mix of elements, including heavily-padded blazers with graphic lines, coat-dresses featuring architectural curves, oversized gowns, futuristic mask-glasses, and fitted wool dresses. Collaborating with British milliner Philip Treacy, Balenciaga also showcased unique accessories such as mushroom hats and gloved hands. The collection was predominantly black, but also featured vibrant pink, vermillion red, grass green, and cobalt blue.
A standout piece from the collection was a monastic bridal gown that reimagined one of the founder’s last works. With a minimalist yet relevant design, this gown represents a new challenge for Balenciaga as it seeks to strike the right balance in its communication between these exceptional creations and its ready-to-wear line.
