Balenciaga Exhibitions Showcased in Bayonne and Getaria

From the iconic sack dress created in 1957 to the recent controversial “sofa cushion” dress, Balenciaga’s legacy in the fashion industry continues to make waves. To get a closer look and decide for yourself if Balenciaga’s influence is still felt today, two exhibitions dedicated to the “Master” are currently on display in Bayonne and Getaria.

The first exhibition, titled “Cristóbal Balenciaga. Fashion and Heritage. Context,” is held at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa in Getaria, the birthplace of the designer. This exhibition showcases 80 meticulously displayed creations, many of which have never been seen before. Visitors are taken on a journey through each garment’s conception to its current exhibition, offering a unique insight into the creation of a Haute Couture piece. Additionally, an interactive process with a 360° view allows visitors to fully grasp the artistry behind Balenciaga’s designs.

On the other side of the border, the DIDAM, a contemporary art space in Bayonne, is hosting “The Century of Balenciaga” exhibition. This exhibition features around a hundred photographs and pieces from private collections, providing a comprehensive overview of Balenciaga’s career, influences, and working method. Balenciaga has gained a reputation for his avant-garde designs, and this exhibition beautifully showcases the designer’s ongoing impact on contemporary luxury fashion.

Balenciaga’s enduring popularity can also be seen in the success of the brand under the creative direction of Demna Gvasalia, and previously under Nicolas Ghesquière and Alexander Wang. The enthusiasm for Balenciaga is reflected in the brand’s exceptional sales figures, with expectations of reaching one billion euros in revenue this year – an impressive milestone for a fashion house established in 1917 and acquired by luxury group Kering in 2001.

For those eager to explore Balenciaga’s legacy, “Cristóbal Balenciaga. Fashion and Heritage. Context” can be visited at the Cristóbal Balenciaga Museoa in Getaria from March 1st to January 12th. Meanwhile, “The Century of Balenciaga” exhibition is taking place at DIDAM in Bayonne from June 7th to September 8th.
