However, it is noteworthy to highlight the differences in spending habits between genders. Men, on average, spend a higher amount of £178.81 compared to women who spend an average of £125.77. Moreover, age seems to play a role in spending habits as well. The survey found that individuals aged 35-44 were the most generous, with an average spend of £165.71. On the contrary, 18-24 year olds, who may have limited disposable income, had the lowest average spend at £105.22. These findings suggest that with age and financial stability, individuals tend to invest more in making their Valentine’s Day celebrations special.

Interestingly, the survey also discovered a small percentage of individuals willing to splurge on their Valentine’s Day gifts. Approximately 2% of respondents indicated that they are prepared to spend over £400, demonstrating that some people spare no expense to express their love and affection towards their partners.

However, it is important to note that the sentiment behind the gift holds more value than the price tag for the majority of respondents. An overwhelming 75% agreed that it is the thought that counts when it comes to gifts. This sentiment resonated strongly with men, as only 1% disagreed, compared to 16% of women. This heartwarming finding emphasizes that people cherish the thought and sentiment behind a gift, rather than its monetary value.

Unfortunately, not every gift meets the expectations of the recipient. The survey revealed that 62% of respondents would openly express their disappointment if they felt their partner had not put enough thought or money into their present. In fact, 24% had already done so in the past. The consequences of such disappointment varied, with 33% of partners buying another gift to make amends, 23% apologizing, and sadly, 18% of couples experiencing relationship breakdowns.

Valentine’s Day is undoubtedly a significant shopping event, with 39% of respondents stating that they spend equal amounts on their partner’s Valentine’s Day gift as they do on their partner’s birthday. This data highlights the importance placed on Valentine’s Day as a chance to express love and appreciation through the act of gift-giving.

As the industry gears up for Valentine’s Day, retailers stand to benefit from these spending habits. However, it is crucial for consumers to remember that the value of a gift lies not in its price tag, but in the sentiment and love behind it.
