Automotive Industry’s Response to Covid-19

Various actors in the automotive industry are banding together to combat the Covid-19 pandemic using their unique capabilities and resources. One notable example is Ferrari, who not only donated a generous sum of 10 million euros to the Italian Civil Protection Department but also announced their involvement in the production of valves for artificial respirators and attachments for protective masks. These crucial components are being produced using 3D printing technology at Ferrari’s prototype department located in their Maranello factory. The collaboration involves partnering with companies like TeamSystem for the valves and Mares, a manufacturer specialized in underwater diving equipment, to adapt diving masks into medical masks.

Similarly, Tesla’s CEO, Elon Musk, has taken action by pledging to donate 1,255 artificial respirators acquired from China, as well as those partially manufactured in Tesla’s Buffalo factory, to New York City. In collaboration with Medtronic, a renowned medical equipment company, Tesla will repurpose certain parts from their Model 3 vehicle to support this initiative.

Porsche has adopted a different approach to contribute to the fight against Covid-19. To raise funds for the United Way Worldwide’s COVID-19 Community Response and Recovery Fund, Porsche is auctioning off a limited-edition 911 Speedster, which was created to commemorate the brand’s 70th anniversary and produced in just 1,948 units. The sale of this exclusive sports car includes a unique Porsche Design watch and an opportunity to visit the Weissach factory in Germany. The auction, organized by Porsche Cars North America and RM Sotheby’s, will continue until Wednesday, April 22nd.

These efforts from prominent automotive players demonstrate a resolute commitment to battling the ongoing pandemic. By utilizing their manufacturing capabilities, partnering with relevant companies, and leveraging their brand influence, they are making significant contributions to the provision of essential medical equipment and supporting communities affected by Covid-19.
