Acne’s Modern Homage: A Blend of Artistic Ingenuity and Avant-Garde Style

Acne’s latest collection, showcased in a Parisian extravaganza on Sunday, was nothing short of a mesmerizing blend of artistic ingenuity and avant-garde style. Drawing inspiration from the enigmatic paintings of Swedish artist August Strindberg, the collection was a homage to the tragic naturalism of Strindberg’s works infused with a modern touch of chiseled chic.

The runway at Maison de la Radio was transformed into a theatrical spectacle as models strutted down in worn leather tunics, bashed silver jeans, and cowboy boots reimagined with hiking elements. Saddle-stitched cowhide suits and golden suede redingotes added a Western flair to the collection, with accessories like feather earrings, aviator glasses, and centurion sandals adorned with Mexicana buckles completing the look.

Designer Jonny Johansson delved into Strindberg’s lesser-known paintings for inspiration this season, collaborating with the Strindberg Foundation to incorporate ‘Flowers of the Moor’ prints into funky cheongsams. The naturalist aesthetic of Strindberg’s paintings, created during his periods of writer’s block, lent a unique depth to the collection that set it apart from the usual haute couture offerings.

While skeptics may view Acne’s foray into the haute couture realm as just another ready-to-wear brand attempting to infiltrate elite territory, the self-assured models exuded a sense of individuality and confidence that justified their presence on the couture calendar. Set against the backdrop of Grace Slick’s haunting rendition of Jefferson Airplane’s ‘White Rabbit’, the show culminated in a rebellious charm, reminiscent of a scene from ‘Big Little Lies’, where high street fashion collided with Parisian couture in a way that would have undoubtedly pleased Strindberg himself.
